What a great book - I couldn't put it down. A wonderful story of a young orphan who is employed as a maid at The Winter Palace - the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia. She becomes a listener - first reporting what she sees and overhears to the Chancellor, then to the Empress before forming a friendship with a lonely German Princess who becomes Catherine The Great. A book of opulence, greed , selfishness, ambition, plots and counterplots. It really captures life at the Russian court. I'm sure this book will be very popular.
