Customer Review

on 3 January 2004
The very opening track on this album promises a feast of delights in store - the motet Nesciens mater virgo virum is a stunningly beautiful piece with a rich eight-part texture, and is sung on this recording with great control and finesse. The Gentlemen of St John's seem to have a great ability not to get in the way of the music, allowing the natural ebb and flow of Mouton's writing to create the dynamic and climactic interest, while the singers maintain impecable musicality and phrasing. Although this is the highlight of the disc, the standard does in no way drop, making for nearly an hour of delightful music from this surprisingly unknown french rennaissance composer. Go and buy it!
