I remember seeing Ross Hunter's musical production of Lost Horizon (1972) in the early 80's on TV. This is the hard-to-find soundtrack album. Although I'm not generally a fan of this genre it was the Bacharach/David songs that made me want to see the movie out of curiosity and how the songs fitted in. 'The World is a Circle' is probably the best known of the film's songs, though most of the others are good in their own right. There was something magical about the film - enchanting, made even more enjoyable by the well-crafted Bacharach songs of course, which I knew before actually seeing the film since I'd managed to get a second-hand vinyl copy of the soundrack. (This CD version is not as good as the vinyl record in terms of sound quality but still a must-have if vinyl is not for you.) The scenes with the High Lama are really quite moving. I guess it appeals to those who hope that somewhere there really might be a Shangri-La; "And when the strong have devoured each other, then at last, the meek shall inherit the earth", quietly predicts the High Lama before he dies. I have a ropey old VHS, off-TV, copy of the film but would dearly love a modern DVD re-issue - if such a thing exists? If not, it's about time it was made available.
