Customer Review

on 1 March 2010
Over the many years of my listening pleasure I've dipped in and out of Mr Gabriels work, sometimes very pleased other times not quite as pleased.
This album on the other hand is just breath taking! I know it's a very over used phrase that springs readily to the lips without much consideration, but believe me this is just a stunning set of cover versions.
I am not familiar with all the songs on the album but the versions have been put together with Gabriels totaly unique stamp. "Mirrorball" by Elbow toook a bit of listening to after having played the grooves out of the original version, but I suppose like a lot of great music that I remember from my past, it doesn't sink in straight away but takes a few listens to grow on you.
I think a great deal of todays music is discarded if it does not instantly appeal,(the throw away society?).
This album is quite heavy going in a few places, hence the need to give it a chance to breathe and grow, when you have given the music the opportunity to get under your skin and either annoy you baggy eyed or thrill you to the heavens, then decide whether to hang on or dump it.
Say what you like about the music of Mr Gabriel, very few will sit on the fence and say "well yeah, it's OK". This has been seen by the few reviews that I've seen here.
The man has captured a huge amount of emotion in all of the songs chosen. Please don't be afraid to shed a tear or two listening to some of the tracks or be angry over the versions of "well known" tracks. Music is supposed to make you feel different emotions. This album does this by the truck load.
Music needs people like Peter Gabriel to continually shake the foundations of the smug music autocrats and pseuds who all too casualy write off some music as being too this or that.
Support one of the best British artists ever and put your faith back in something to believe in. That that is damn good music
