5.0 out of 5 stars You'll learn stuff you didn't know, 25 July 2009
This review is from: Laptops For Dummies (Paperback)
Highly recommended. I know a lot of people don't like the folksy style of the Dummies books but they are undoubtedly friendly and unintimidating. This one contains an interesting history of the laptop and many of its suggestions are tip top. It forced me to sit down and look at my laptop properly for the first time, really overhaul the junk that I had on it, sort out its battery life and give it some extra memory. Fantastic! Like having a new machine.

ashford says:
What the Fn keys do varies from machine to machine (I think) but this book makes the point (obvious really, but I had never properly thought about it) that a laptop IS different from a desktop machine, e.g fewer resources, so needs to be kept lean. So, specifically it helped me by encouraging me to get rid of all the bloatware, put some more memory in (which was not difficult, it just slid into a slot) get a second, bigger, longer lasting battery, make use of tune up utility and read the manual where I learned that the manufacturer had given the machine all sorts of features and shortcuts that could actually be quite useful). Anyway, I have a machine that is now embarrasingly old and which I used to despair of because it was so slow and buggy...but which after its basic makeover I have had four or five years of heavy use out of it while it has worked like a dream.
