Ken Branagh and Kevin Costner facing-off as opposing ‘spy-masters’ with up-and-coming action hero Chris Pine their ‘piggy-in-the-middle’…Surely movie gold? Er, no. The latter could actually be the blandest thing on the big screen since that guy from that film a few years back, whilst the less said about mopey love-interest Keira Knightley (a woman who, lest we forget, has made a career out of being the mopey love-interest – casting directors take note), the better. Branagh is as decent as you’d expect playing a Russian villain with lip-smacking (almost Bondian) relish, and Costner plays the solid if unspectacular face of the CIA, who draws Ryan into a life of spying after the latter is almost fatally injured whilst on service in Afghanistan. Ultimately then, it’s paycheck time for some superb actors and some forgettable ones, and perhaps a reminder that this kind of thing is best left in the 1990s where it belongs.
