Hooray! A Wonderful Second Album From the Blossoms!,
This review is from: Live At The Turf Club (MP3 Download)
When the first Cactus Blossoms came out a couple of years ago it was love at first listen for me. 10 spiffing tracks in just 28 minutes, a little slice of country heaven, and this second album has been much anticipated (by me, if nobody else).
I'm not a great fan of live albums and will admit to a slight bit of disappointment when I read that this was the format chosen for this follow-up release. But I need not have worried, as this is another near perfect collection of snappy little tunes (with only one song repeating from the first album).
"Live At the Turf Club" only seems to be a download release at present. That's not a huge problem in itself but as ever with such things I get a bit frustrated that you don't know who's playing and who wrote the songs. The band normally consists of brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey, together with Mike Russell on fiddle, Liz Draper on upright bass, and Randy Broughten on pedal steel guitar/dobro, and I assume the same line-up appears here, with at least an accordian added. There are a few definite covers (or classics if you prefer!) - "San Antonio Rose", "Crazy Arms", "Travelin' Blues" (complete with great yodeling) and "Yes Sir!" - but I really don't know about the others. I'm guessing that a fair number of them will be originals. Either way, there are no clunkers!!
Very nice album: great harmony vocals, wonderful instrumentalist, and toe-tapping a-plenty! A late addition to my favourite albums of the year. If you like your country with a more traditional feel, I can strongly recommend this one!
