thoroughly reliable performances of two interesting works,
This review is from: Piano Trios (Ashkenazy Trio) (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for the Tchaikovsky, which I slightly knew and wanted to get to know better. It's a 'big' Trio - the first and second movements around the 20-minute mark - and has its weak moments undoubtedly, but these are put in the shade by the splendid lyricism, drive and commitment of most of the score. The performance here seems to me to be excellent, as is the recorded balance - very important in such a muscular work in which the piano features so prominently. As for the Arensky, it's well worth hearing, and it is nice to have it coupled with Tchaikovsky, who knew and admired the younger composer highly.
