I decided to order this book because I had been impressed by the author's TV contributions to the ongoing debate over the BP spill. I liked his direct, no-nonsense but measured manner and this comes across in the book as well as he seeks to balance energy needs with environmental needs. Whilst 'Why we hate the oil companies' has been written for an American audience there is much to interest any reader who has watched aghast as yet another oil spill devastates local ecosystems (setting aside the huge irony that this has occurred on the door-step of the world's greediest guzzler of oil-based products). As a former head of Shell in the US he clearly knows his stuff and has a wealth of experience (and anecdotes) to draw upon. Although I had pre-existing perceptions about the industry my understanding of the role of regulation, which is central to John Hofmesieter's proposal for change, was rather vague. Its not a long read but its a very rewarding one.
