Customer Review

on 27 December 2001
Mississippi John Hurt's playing and singing are gentle and relaxed, and although not all the songs he plays are strictly blues, they are played in a country blues style. This album contains some lovely songs - especially "Let the mermaids flirt with me" ("When my earthly trials are over/ cast my body out in the sea/ save on the undertaker's bill/ let the mermaids flirt with me.") Most are solo performances, but some are accompanied by Patrick Sky on second guitar, which adds nicely to the arrangement without dominating it. Country blues fans should have at least one Mississippi John Hurt album, and this is as good as any to begin with.
