RYAOB is one of the most remarkable books I have read in ages. Its examination of the ritualisation of power and oppression, and the ways we accommodate ourselves to them is profound and alarming. Crisp has unleashed demons, but he has the style and sense of construction to keep them in harness and use them for his own ends. All sorts of mistaken accusations may be made against the book - misogyny, sadomasochistic fantasy etc. Etc. - and that no doubt is why mainstream publishers fought shy publishing it, while appreciating its extraordinary artistry, but there will be readers who understand and be moved by this extraordinary work. They will understand how fundamentally humane it is, and, often, how genuinely humorous.
