I read an interview where Paul Anderson (the director of Alien vs Predator) was saying that he had been a fan of the ALIEN/PREDATOR movies for over 10 years and had written this movie years ago - so you would expect something good from a fan boy.
Well it does not show here as this movie is not logical in certain areas - Although I must admit the film starts off very well - right up until the first few death scenes - It seems like its following the plots of both ALIENS and PREDATOR while giving some nods to the previous classics -
And it also features a decent acting cast of Lance Henrikson and horror movie actor Raul Bava - With Ewen Bremner thrown in for good measure (He's not a bad actor either.) - You think the movie is going to be great but then the dumbness creeps in - It turns into an action fest - and not a good one at that -
there is no suspense - The characters start to die in the sillyiest most obvious fashion - There is an interesting Father/Daughter subtext which could have been explored as good as the ALIENS mother/daughter story - but even that is thrown out of the window when one of the lead actors is wasted.
However even all that can be excused if the movie had stuck to common defined logic of the series and defined in the previous movies of the 2 classic series - For instance where did all those ALIEN creatures come from in the climax of this movie? There were dozens of them but there we'ren't that many hosts were there? This is not explained!
And why the didn't those Predators see with heat vision, when one of their own was infected by an ALIEN? Also the idea of Predators using humans as cattle is against their own warrior code - remember in the original PREDATOR movies they dont attack unnarmed/non-agressive creatures.
This movie sucks - Paul Anderson should have concentrated on making the story/script better before filming this - In fact if he makes another ALIEN or Predator movie I will be amazed at whoever pays him to do it when there are many more talented young directors out there of a much higher calibre.
