This review is from: Mad Men - Complete Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
There's a trend at the moment for any TV show with high production values to garner almost universal critical acclaim. Some of these shows, such as Breaking Bad, live up to the hype in my opinion, but I have to be honest and say that I found Mad Men to be merely a very good TV show, rather than a great one.
There's plenty to like, and I'd be suspicious of anyone who gave it one star (that's the usual knee jerk reaction against anything popular). It looks gorgeous and the cast all hold it together extremely well, but I think beyond that it falls a bit flat.
It's actually a fairly standard office drama in many ways, simply located in a 1960s setting. The 60s element is really thrust into your face in a very unsubtle way, however, with the characters tripping over themselves to make exaggerated sexist/racist comments, or shoehorn in references about historic events. It's more like a caricature of the period than a reasoned exploration of 1960s attitudes.
Overall, I'll probably watch the second series, but it didn't grab me as being anything special.
