This review is from: The Sense of an Ending (Hardcover)
I am writing this review nearly three years after I first read this, and yet I can still remember where I was, what I was doing when I was reading it. If I were to open it now, I would be transported back in time. For me, that's the sign of a truly great novel.
I don't consider myself a Barnes fan - liked History of the World in 10 1/2 chapters, struggled with Flaubert's Parrot, rather liked Arthur & George, yet wasn't thrilled.... But in the Sense of an Ending I was. The longing, the regret, the harking back to a time when like us all, the author had youth but not wisdom, filled me such an overpowering sense of nostalgia that I could almost smell it.
