5.0 out of 5 stars Irritatingly clever or "Damn I wish I'd thought of that!", 8 July 2003
This review is from: Chancer: The First Series - Episodes 1-6 [VHS] [1990] (VHS Tape)
Chancer, for me, was a joy beginning to end. Watching the first episode on television the memory is as crystal now as it was then. The plot lynch pin, sharply hansome Clive Owen - playing the slightly curved, if not actually bent, city trader - shows all the early signs of the talent that would secure his rumoured running place to be our next 007. A city man myself for 20 years, the settings on the trading floors were practically documentary in their accuracy. Owen, sliding easily into the role of the mischievously impish "Steve Crane", brings an instantly recognisable character (to one used to seeming them daily) to startling life. The ingeniously linear solutions he brings to bear in his battles with city mandarin, Leslie Phillips, are as diverting as they are entertaining, leaving one with the almost unsatisfactory feeling that, worldly wise though one thinks one may be, one probably would not in a month of Sundays have thought of anything similar - "bloody hell, that was clever! (mutter mutter)". The switch to the rural setting where Owens involvement with Panther (a Morgan clone) Cars owner Benjamin Whitrow, is seamless. Whitrow, always a joy to watch, is perfect as the small production, high class car boss and family man, and the growing trust and respect that builds between the two men is touchingly inspirational. The clear thinking Owens' ability to save the day will have you sitting back feeling bloody annoyed with yourself, yet again, as you marvel at his knack at pulling victory from the brink of certain bloody disaster (mutter mutter). There are one liners to keep everyone happy from all walks. For a ripping yarn, I can remember few other productions that kept me as surprised and amused as Chancer did. Directors Alan Grint and Laurence Moody's teamwork bought a story to life and left me with a lasting sense of having enjoyed a classic. Take a chance on Chancer, a rivetingly and thoroughly exciting feel good (but non-mush) romp.
