i was amazed while listening to the basement tapes. i had read some reviews and i had become intrugued, but i wouldn't ever expect such an experience and pleasure! what you can hear here is a totally new and different perspective of dylan and the band. actually the "sound" has something i never catched listening to the "official" dylan/band records, namely the connection to the music from the other coast, mostly gerry garcia's grateful dead and the jefferson airplane...
the choral, freely articulate and softly emptathetic way the "basement" music sounds in a kaleidoscopic mix, and the very athmosphere of that sound brings up a "deja entendu", other-than-dylanian perception; you stop and wonder where you have heard that already, and it doesn't take long before you go and flip into the player some of the airplane's and garcia, and there it is! they combine!
no wonder: it's stuff from the same period, but one would never expect this coast-to-coast connection. sure, it's just a connection, but to my taste it sounds like a strong one and a one which you hardly get to when listening to the more definite/definitive, structured, i daresay somewhat colder sound we're used to with dylan and the band's recordings.
well, all this is about my personal and maybe naive discovery, but as for the basement tapes themselves, just let me say: get'em and enjoy listening! marino -bobo- romeo.
