This is a superb album that repays repeated listening. The 'hit' single 'boppa do down down' is a bubblegum classic of towering stature, as any song that contains the couplet "lookin' so kooky, on her suzuki" deserves to be.
It would be a mistake to write the Third Rail off as just another bubblegum outfit, songs like 'Dream Street', a critique of the manipulative nature of advertising, reveal a cynical centre lying just below the sugar coating.
West Coast style vocal harmonies and instrumentation abound on this record, but the Third Rail bring a distinctly East Coast wryness to the familiar 60s sunshine pop sound.
About half of the material on this disc is absolutely first rate, the other half so-so, but the good stuff is so exceptionally good that the hit and miss nature of ID Music doesn't rankle. The only regret is that the Third Rail don't seem to have stayed together long enough to make any more records.
The liner notes are fairly detailed and result from interviews with band members, Revola have also included the single mixes of some of the album tracks, though to be quite honest I can't hear the difference between the two versions, but this all adds up to a well researched and comprehensive package that befits a terribly under-rated band.
