Secrets and Lies is a film with Timothy Spall at its heart and at his best. He is the pivotal figure in a family full of secrets that have ruined relationships between Spall's character and his sister (Brenda Blethyn) and niece on one hand, and those two and Spall's wife on the other. This storyline is well suited to the 'realism' that the director is best known - and the final scene at a barbecue hosted at Spall's home is cringeworthy because it is so believable. All sorts of thoughts are provoked by this storyline - probably different thoughts for every viewer - and it humerous as well as serious. The acting by all the characters is outstanding.
