Really good album that fully realises the potential of "Roll With You",
This review is from: Come And Get It! (Audio CD)
I agree that this is a smoother record than "Roll With You" but for me this is very much a good thing - I think that both Eli and the band sound less shrill and more relaxed and self-assured, which gives a much more authentic sound. Mike Elizondo, who has previously worked with Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50 Cent, seems an odd choice as producer but I think he does an excellent job and resists the temptation to add any hip-hop/rap stylings. I also found the songs here more original than the 60s soul clones on "Roll With You". I particularly liked the slow soul ballad "Time Will Tell", the rocking "Tell Me What I Wanna Hear" and the Soul Stirrers-style gospel of 'You Can Run On'. Eli and the band also tackle smooth Motown northern soul, southern Stax-style soul and on the closer "Explosion" James Brown-style funk.
This is a really good album that has fully realised the potential of "Roll With You".
