This is, in my opinion, the very best beginner's guide to the night sky that exists. It is a crying shame that this series has not continued to be updated. It is a superb pocket size, written in a very friendly way, lavishly illustrated, although at a modest price and the ideal starting point for someone wishing to learn about observing.
The only minor criticism that one can have is that the planetary chapters at the end are very short and that a few of the constellation charts are just blank spaces near other constellations, but then these are constellations with no bright stars.
The majority of the book does not go out of date at all and if you can buy an old edition it will still be of great use.
