I enjoy the ideas in this book and wanted to read more, however there is a problem and that is that the characters are not fully realised and therefore don't really come alive, and it is therefore difficult to care what happens to them, and the ideas are not enough to keep my interest. I also found them quite dry although they do improve with each new book, but still there is that sense that the author is not really involved enough in the characters to let us feel how they feel and to see that how they feel impacts on the plot.

I have the same problem with these books. It's a shame because they could be really good if the characters were better realised.
