Struan Robertson is a well-read but inexperienced teenager, leaving Scotland for the first time to work as a live-in carer for a writer left immobilized by a stroke. Phillip Prys's Hampstead milieu and privileged dysfunctional family are baffling to Struan, but gradually he starts to adapt to their world as much as he recoils from it.
I read this book in a day, loving every minute of it. The writing is sharp and humorous, with the narrator recounting these 1989 events from a twenty-first century vantage point. Clanchy is an established writer, but this is her first novel: I look forward to reading more from her.
