'Spacey Jazz Funk And Philly Soul',
This review is from: Voyager/Time Is Slipping Away (Audio CD)
Of these two albums 'Voyager' has long changed hands for decent money on vinyl so this conversion to CD is a very welcome one for collectors. Released in 1978, it is perhaps the funkiest of the mans output and includes the club hit single 'All Night Long'. Once again, the album has a spacey vibe to it but the tracks have a much funkier, experiamental and less commercial edge to them than those from his previous two albums. 'Voyager' is therefore more an album for real 'Jazz Funk Heads' and is not for those new to the genre I feel. 'Time Is Slipping Away' on the other hand was probably Wansel's most commercial effort and is rather more of a patchy set. 'The Sweetest Pain' is definitely one for lovers of real soul as is the good, repetative 'New Beginning'. 'It's Been Cool' is a good dancer which reminds me somewhat of The Gap Band due to it's 'smacking beat' while the title track is a good ballad. There's not perhaps so much of interest to the Jazz Funk crowd on this album and 'Funk Attack' is a truly
awful track but overall as an album listen it's still pretty good stuff. Worth a pop.
