Simply in a league of its own,
This review is from: Mozart: Horn Concertos (Audio CD)
One of those recordings that spoils us for all that come after it .
Although Karajan's accompaniment might be regarded as somewhat overly smooth compared say with Kempe's characterful support of Alan Civil in their recording in 1967- it works because all the character, beauty and emotion one needs comes from Dennis Brain .
He simply was in a class of his own. His timbre unmistakable , his playing technically superb and most all he brought out all the inherent emotion in every piece he ever played . Mono recording as it was it knocks all the competition into a cocked hat - from Civil to Tuckwell, from Pyatt to Baumann - nobody comes close and probably never will
Recommended with all possible enthusiasm.
