Customer Review

on 3 October 2010
Anyone expecting another dose of heart-wrenching deep soul along the lines of Kent's 'Dave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures' series, 'Our Turn To Cry' or 'When A Man Cries' CDs will be sorely disappointed with 'Deep Shadows'. A fair chunk of the tracks date from the mid 70s, when soul was becoming a bit too slick and formulaic for its own good, and even the 60s sides are mainly from the uptown rather than the downhome end of the soul spectrum. There's some overlap with the 'Dave Godin' volumes in The Shaladons' version of Kenny Carter's 'Showdown' and yet another mix (the fourth released) of Jaibi's 'You Got Me' and whilst 'Deep Shadows' is certainly listenable, it lacks the emotional punch of the other Kent compilations mentioned; I would have preferred less smooching and more testifying.
