This is an album that has everything: memorable tunes and lyrics with a character and grace of its own. I consider John Prine's first album to be one of the greatest achievements of the last 30 years. He is (on this album at least) easily as good as Dylan in his prime. The album has too many good songs. The best are Illegal Smile and Sam Stone. These tracks are totally melodic and pure. Once heard, these songs will stay with you forever. They are the songs you sing at work in your heaad, or when you need comfort or optimism. I would suggest that Prine is a cross between Dylan and the excellent David Gray. This is a must-have purchase. I own around 700 cds and many box sets, but I do not own an album as simple, honest and melodic as this one (perhap I do but I can't remember at present). A must have for any discerning music fan.
