5.0 out of 5 stars The Acheron Pulse, 1 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Acheron Pulse (Doctor Who) (Audio CD)
This is the second in a loosely overarching storyline (not that it matters if you have not heard the first one, The Burning Prince with the Fifth Doctor as the story stands alone well enough). This story features the Sixth Doctor, and the third in the storyline, The Shadow Heart, features the Seventh Doctor. In all three stories the Doctor is without companions so the action is focused very much on the individual Doctors and their unique personalities.

At the end of the first story The Burning Prince the Fifth Doctor has left Sharnax believing that all who were on the planet and the ships are dead and there is nothing more he can do. In this story, the Sixth Doctor, attempting to return the royal regalia to the Drashani Empire under Empress Cheni is dragged slightly sideways in space and forward in time, so it is now thirty years after the events in the Fifth Doctor story. The Drashani are at war with a mysterious group known as the Wrath - and the impacts of that war are about to hit another planet, Cawdor, deep in the heart of the Drashani Empire. The events of The Burning Prince are about to come back to haunt the Doctor. Can he put things right and stay alive as well?

This is great stuff; the Sixth Doctor, played by Colin Baker is in fine form. He is delightfully arrogant and full of himself but gets pulled up short several times, particularly by Teesha who has a sharp tongue on her and sorts the Doctor, and Dukhin out no problem. The characters in the story are good, except I found the character of Empress Cheni slightly annoying.

It's hard to say much more without giving away plot clues, so suffice it to say that this is a worthy follow-on to The Burning Prince, the Sixth Doctor is as great as ever, and I look forward heartily to the Seventh Doctor follow-on story, The Shadow Heart.
