5.0 out of 5 stars The best Traviata ever!, 30 April 2008
This review is from: La Traviata in Paris ( La Traviata ) [DVD] (DVD)
I don't like tragic opera's, but I do love this one. Eteri Gvazava is a natural Violette Valery. On one side the experienced courtisane, on the other side a loving woman. Jose Cura is a flamboyant Alfredo. Not like the stiff Alfredo's in other versions. It is understandable that Violetta falls in love with him. The entourage is very well done in Paris in 1900. The camerawork is fluid. Both ballets (gipsy girls and mattadores) are stunning. The mattadore is a real spanish macho bullfighter doing a flamenco dance. This is done live ouside the theatre. No playbacking, but live sung. On a scale of one to five this is absolutely a ten! Sorry for all other versions: this is the one to have.

My video standard always has been Anna Moffo's "Traviata", but the lack of dancing to so much of the ballroom-like melodies in the VHS featuring Moffo always has bothered me. Well, apparently, from what is said about this DVD, that lack has been recitified here, so I'll be ordering this one. Not to mention that I am a great fan of José Cura!
