Disappointing and an anti climax - contains spoilers.,
This review is from: What Richard Did [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I expected big things from this but as usual the British press got carried away with themselves over an independent style film , not British this time but Irish. A young rubgy player called Richard meets a girl, falls in love and gets jealous when she seems to be overly friendly with another player in his rugby team. They go to a party where he and said other player get into an argument and the other guy knocks Richard down with a punch. Richard and friends punch him a few times and when he is on the ground Richard kicks him in the head once. The boy seems fine but freakishly he ends up dying and Richard and his friends do what pretty much everyone else would and try to hide what happened as they are terrified.
I expected from the title that Richard would have done something utterly appalling that we all be horrified by,but in fact he punches and kicks someone who assaults him first. Perhaps in the world of the public school middle classes this might be some kind of outrage but to me it just seemed like he reacted like any typical teenager would. He was assaulted, reacted, and in this case his assailant died. Terrified, he lies and tries to get away with it, which is probably what many people would do. He is not a rapist or a paedophile, just a normal teenager a bit pissed at a party and who gets into a fight started by someone else.
I think we are supposed to be shocked because he comes from a middle class family and people like that should know better. Thats all well and good but it doesnt make the film any more interesting or his crime remotely outrageous or appalling as is implied on the box. I almost felt that the guy who was given a kicking deserved it.Very disappointing and a complete anti climax.I felt slightly conned to be honest from the description of the film. Another one for the charity bag.
