I review a lot of computer security packages for Amazon's vine programme. So many in fact that it's got to the point that they almost blur into one. Most of the packages offer the same(or very similar) features and most of those features can be got for free in separate packages.
When I say the price of this package, I was ready to give it 3 stars, as it's up to £20(though typically £10) than some similar packages available today on Amazon. All the standard features are here - anti-virus, anti-malware, firewall, etc. So, why didn't I give it 3 stars? Why is Trend Micro's latest a little different? Maximum Security 2011 comes with 3 things that make it stand-out from the crowd of similar software.
There's actually a great backup system included; each user(and this package covers 3) is given 10 gigabytes of flexible backup. Unlike similar packages you're getting both more storage here and the ability to use it more flexibly. You can email a link to a friend for instance, which lets them access your files or even edit them, depending on the type of file. Whilst friends need to create an account on-line to access your files, there is a feature that lets you share files via Facebook and twitter, without the need for the special on-line account to be created.
Maximum Security 2011 also includes a system tuner which can easily delete unnecessary files, saving space and delete cookies and other tracking data used by most web sites.
Finally, the software comes with protection for your smartphone, if you use a Symbian or Windows Mobile 5.0, 6.1, or 6.5-based phone. The protection will allow you to remotely-wipe or lock your phone if it's lost or stolen, which is pretty impressive. Less impressive though is that Trend Micro don't seem to offer that same protection for Android, iPhone or Blackberry devices. They can be forgiven for not supporting Windows Phone 7 as it just came out.
All-in-all this is a pretty impressive package. If not the lack of Android, iPhone and Blackberry remote lock and wipe functionality and the software's insistence that I have Internet Explorer 7 or 8 installed, this would've got 5 stars. Ordinarily I end reviews of this type of software packages by saying that this isn't for an experienced computer user and that all the functionality found here can be got from a few packages for free. This isn't the case with this product as some of the functionality(especially if you use one of the supported mobile phone operating systems on your smartphone) is worthwhile, especially given that it supports up to three computers.
