I'm an avid SciFi enthusiast but I haven't read much Stephen Baxter and this collection is ok for passing a few evening hours. I like my SciFi to be firmly rooted in science fact and several of the stories here fail that test. In the opening piece 'Erstkontakt' the alien craft is reportedly from Alpha Centauri. There is only disputed evidence that a planet orbits CenB at a distance so close that it would be toast and unviable. Secondly the craft uses a reaction drive powered by a kind of fusion engine. Even with this power source incredible amounts of energy would be required even to reach a fraction of the speed of light and the effects of relativity would apply. In the story 'The Children of Time' describing the demise of civilisation over eons of time following ice ages and environmental catastrophes; the premise that the human race would stagnate and eventually go extinct is ridiculous. Even before the ice increased the resilient human race would implement survival strategies and possibly even colonise the Moon. A light read if you suspend belief.
