It's thirty years since Vienna failed - just - to hit top spot in the UK singles chart thanks to Joe Dolce's Shaddap You Face and latterly by John Lennon's Woman, which hit the pinnacle due to hysteria following Lennon's untimely death.
Now a group of music fans have launced a campaign to right what they call a 'thirty year faux-pas' by encouraging people to download the track between 4th and 10th April in an attempt to finally see the song at numero uno.
It's a popular song, although recent opinion is polarised- split between the lovers and the haters. It was just the same in the early eighties, when 'pigeon-holing' an artist meant that whole sections of the public missed out on certain genres of music. It was the same for me- I was a Mod, therefore no rock record could or would enter my collection. Until of course pigeon-holing became less fashionable, and nowadays of course my collection is as diverse as the next person's.
Vienna is - whatever people think - a great song. If you enjoy this track today as I perhaps secretly did thirty years ago, perhaps you'll download it too, and help rewrite history?
