1.0 out of 5 stars waste of money and waste of time, 21 Oct. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Jane Austen ITV Collection - Mansfield Park / Northanger Abbey / Emma (3 Disc Box Set) [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
These were quite dreadful and very disappointing. I should have known ITV productions would not match up to anything produced by the BBC. I was fooled by Andres Davis' name!

That is because Andrew Davies had nothing to do with this...........the writer was Maggie Wadey, who was responsible for the BBC's disasterous 1983 production of Northanger Abbey. This woman should be banned from adapting Jane Austen!

The reviewer is correct Andrew Davies did write the screen play for Northanger Abbey in this collection. Maggie Wadey wrote the screen play for Mansfield Park in this collection which stared Billie Pipper. My opinion is that this version of Mansfield Park is better than the 1983 BBC Production and the 1999 Production. Although I would like to see BBC make another Mansfield Park. Until then this 2007 version of MP will do.

Also Andrew Davies wrote the screen play for Emma which is in this ITV Collection.

Being a fan of Mr Davies' writing (another tasty morsel in my collection is 'A Very Peculiar Practice') I think these adaptations, along with the recent Sense & Sensibility on the BBC, show that good casting is almost of equal importance to good screenwriting. As yet, sadly none of the Austen adaptations written by Davies have lived up to the perfect casting that made his 1995 Pride & Prejudice adaptation still the best one ever.
