The Asian movie industry seems to be especially fond of the 'revenge horror' genre, which has produced some appalling but riveting dramas such as Oldboy and Lady Snowblood. This isn't one of them, sadly. The plot is garbled, with a twist that is telegraphed practically from the start and a serious lack of credibility to the main characters and the action. There are some poignant moments, but most of them are dragged out so long they become absurd rather than touching; and some moments of tension, but again mostly spoiled by descent into tedium or melodrama. It lacks the visceral nastiness of the Mr Vengeance style of film, substituting a banal unpleasantness which is simply repellent. At times it tries to become social comment, and at others to be 'artistic', but it botches both. I watched right to the end hoping that at some point it would improve, but it was at least consistent - it was dull, silly and ugly to the very end.
