I've been aware of Nikka Costa but haven't managed to listen to any of her previous recordings. I'll most probably do so now on the strength of this release. She returns with her recent album "Pebble To A Pearl" released on the relaunched legendary soul label Stax records.
The opening songs "Stuck To You" and "Can't Please Everybody" confirms Ms Costa is comfortable covering a combination of soul & rock. The title track "Pebble To A Pearl" is an excellent piece of funk with a strong nod to Stevie Wonder's Boogie On Reggae Woman.
The 70s funk and soul style continues with Cry Baby, Keep Wanting More and Keep Pushin'. Love To Love You Less has a nice bluesy feel to it; the track Damn I Said It First injects a reggae sound along side the soul and funk. Highlights for me are Lovin You, a nice slow soulful sound that sits comfortably within the Stax soul sound and Bullets In the Sky with its dark, haunting sound and thoughtful lyrics about war.
Overall this is a good album of styles with a 1970s influence thrown in. Whether you like rock, pop, soul and funk, this release does it best to satisfy those tastes. Recommended.
