This record was where Paradise Lost started their inexorable journey towards being total sellouts. Shades of God may have seen increasing tendencies toward standard minor scales and vocal melody, but this actually has SONGS on! The horror! However, the progression was healthy. Another "Gothic" would have been boring, and this record, possibly more than its hugely successful successor, Draconian Times, is a landmark in Gothic metal. Worth Buying for "Embers Fire", "Widow" and "True Belief" alone. Keep an eye out for the "Seals the sense" EP if you can't get this.
