Should have stayed 'missing',
This review is from: Dr Who Miss Adv:lords Of The Stor (Doctor Who Missing Adventures) (Paperback)
Sadly I cannot concur with the previous reviewer of this novel. After eagerly anticipating a story that bridged two of the most memorable 5th Doctor television stories I was hugely disappointed. To be honest I have yet to discover a David A Macintee Doctor Who story that does stand up well - 'White Darkness' and 'Sanctuary' were two of the least memorable 'New Adventures' stories of the series.
The main problem is that the plot is so boring. I have always found The Sontarans to be some of the best-realised adversaries the Doctor ever encountered; and I'm waiting eagerly for Russell Davies to resurrect them but they are not well-served here. Commander Loxx is a typical milataristic Sontaran and as usual The Rutans are their nemeses - the two races fighting a never-ending battle for supremacy; in this case The Sontarans are hiding on a British-colony type planet and using the locals as guinea-pigs in their search for a weapon that will exterminate The Rutans once and for all.
To be honest the most interesting character here is Turlough - freed from his one dimensional TV persona we see him playing the odds and sneaking around for all he's worth - if only the rest of the characters were as well-served.
