A Peerless Historian,
This review is from: Captain Professor: The Memoirs of Sir Michael Howard (Hardcover)
Sir Michael Howard is the foremost military historian of his time. No other writes with such elegance or such profound knowlege. Unlike other military historians he is a superb historian who writes with fluency and authority about history in general.
I had the privilege of being taught by him when I was on the very first War Studies MA course at Kings College, His lectures were outstanding. Unlike others I have experienced elsewhere he speaks with clarity and his lectures have an enviable structure.
Sir Michael is also a very kind man who takes a genuine interest in his students. He is also a superb supervisor for doctoral students giving advice and encouragement.
While a serving officer on the staff of the Royal Military College of Science Shrivenham (now the Defence Academy) I used him many times as a visiting lecturer. He proved to be a great favourite with officer students.
Despite his gallant war record he seldom mentiones it or his privileged upbringing. He is that rarity, an outstanding academic and a gentleman. No other alive today is his equal
A book to savour but do read all of his books, they are gems.
