It is now 12 years since Cuban born violin maestro Omar Puente came to England and in that time he has dazzled audiences at live performances with his extraordinary talent and yet with the exception of a couple of collaborations, has not been recorded, until now.
Having toured with Courtney Pine for the last couple of years ( and it takes a brave and very talented musician to duel nightly with Pine at live gigs!), they have collaborated off stage for this debut on Pines label Destin-E and it includes a galaxy of stars; Pine himself, Dennis Rollins, Robert Mitchell, Eska and a whole section of Cuban percussionists, singers and guitarists.
The album itself is a treasure chest of delights, all tracks are self composed with the exception of a gorgeous bolero version of You Are Too Beautiful and reflect his love of dance music played with Cuban flair with references to the African roots and classical background of Puente's musical life.
The glittering star of the album is without doubt the remarkable virtuoso violin performance of Puente who on each and every track dazzles and sparkles, he is a stunning musician and with this album announces himself as a world class performer, composer and arranger.
It is brilliant, exciting, superbly produced ( by Pine and Puente ) and for anyone who enjoys, jazz, latin, cuban, african, classical or dance music this should be an essential purchase.
