When i saw the adverts for this film, I had high hopes of a blockbuster of the year type film but when I eventually saw it on dvd if failed to meet these expectations. I think most people have a vague idea of the basic plot line to this film, a mass of robots intent on the destruction of humanity, of course in true hollywood style, a dysfunctional family is thrown into the mixing pot to add a point of focus, and indeed a rather refreshing perspective from an individuals point of view. Another film which uses a similar view is Signs with Mel Gibson. War of the Worlds undoubtedly has some excellent effects and camera shots which never fails to captivise you, however I feel there is a basic lacking in the storyline. There is no real emotional attachment to the characters in the story and you feel like your being dragged through a film where you just want to freeze frame every so often and gather you thoughts! Some of these attributes were purposely meant by the Director Steven Speilberg, a film which is meant to be a little chaotic, from one individuals point of view and with little logical explanantion to the nature of the attack and overall situation. Indeed i'm sure that the purpose was to keep the flavour of the original intact whilst adding a different more modern stance to the film. However I was not looking for an artistic blockbuster or just a straight forward massacure, I was looking for a film which took all the elements needed to make a great film, where you come away feeling truly entertained and emotionally challenged. This film did not do this for me at all. In summary I was disappointed because I wanted a great film and only got a mediocre one, i'm sure some people will like it a lot but equally some people will think exactly like I do. Thats why I am challenging the previous reviews.
