This review is from: Delibes: Sylvia [Blu-ray] [2009] [2010] [Region Free] (Blu-ray)
This performance of Frederick Ashton's Sylvia ballet formed part of the Royal Ballet's 75th anniversary celebrations in 2005. This production is a full restoration of Ashton's full 3 Act ballet produced originally in 1952. The settings and costumes can only be described as opulent and the choreography has all the elegance and humour that can be expected of Ashton's work at its very best.

The story is based on a Greek legend and tells of the amorous adventures of Syvia involving the conflicting desires of the shepherd Arminta, Orion, Eros and Diana. The Corps de Ballet fulfil the roles of Sylvia's hunting companions and her attendants plus Orion's concubines. The men have active roles in all of this with character parts beyond merely supporting the various ballerinas. This all adds up to an engaging variety and a veritable feast for the eyes.

The star roles of Sylvia and Aminta are taken by Darcey Bussell and Roberto Bolle. Orion is portrayed by Thiago Soares, Eros by Martin Harvey and Diana by Mara Galeazzi and all of them dance their roles to perfection and with evident relish. The supporting Corps de Ballet are also excellent and a special word ought to be made for the effective roles of Orion's concubines and attendants in Act 2. Les Chasseresses in Act 1 are also women to be reckoned with!

The recording is well up to the high standards of Opus Arte with clear and detailed camera work giving a nice balance between close and panoramic shots. The sound excellently reveals the quality of the orchestra in PCM 5.1 and stereo. There is the option to watch a detailed description of each act illustrated and related by Darcey Bussell prior to each act. This is an alternative option to watching her 20 minute documentary as an extra feature. There is also a short illustrated synopsis and a cast gallery.

The audience clearly loved this performance and production and this pure sense of enjoyment is clearly caught by the recording. It seems definitive to me on all counts and I am sure that many purchasers would agree. As an example of traditional ballet at its very finest this is an outstanding release and I am sure that it deserves every one of the full 5 stars.
