Good story, with a real'feel' for the period set in a declining Roman Britain in the fourth century. Only one thing spolit it for me and that was the 'fantasy' element. I don't know why the lead baddie had to have magical powers - albeit used sparingley but I did wonder why he didn't just walk up to the Emperor and take his throne off him if he has such amazing powers. Maybe all will be revealed in future instalments. Having said that if you don't mind a bit of magic - and it is only a bit - mixed in with your historical novels give it a go.
