Modern (British) soldiers at war. Richard Holmes is both a professor and a colonel in the army so he really knows what he is talking about. This excellent work is based upon observations by the men involved in the fighting around Al Amarah and Basra during 2004. As a keen News watcher though, I am outraged that these pitched battles, every bit as fierce and deadly as the more publicised American engagements, were totally ignored by the domestic media. It is no surprise, having read this, that too many returning soldiers have personal problems when the society to which they return has no idea of what they had to face on a daily basis. The shameful News media let these boys down totally. However, the book itself goes some way to righting these wrongs if only it becomes widely read, and it deserves to be. Written in an easy to read manner with stunning accounts of lethal actions it is utterly absorbing.
