This review is from: Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet [DVD] (DVD)
This was filmed,in 1984 when Wayne Eagling and Alessandri Ferri were young dancers - perfect for the roles of Romeo and Juliet. Ferri was Kenneth McMillan's interest at that time - the nearest he came to finding another Lynn Seymour, on whom who he created the role of Juliet. It's a wonderful ballet with gorgeous music - but the 2 lead dancers bring a youth and sensuality to the ballet that is not often seen. Chemistry!! For ballet lovers interested in Royal Ballet history and dancers there are some great performances by such as Leslie Edwards, Gerd Larsen, David Drew, Donald McLeary.....and many other great names.
I've seen some wonderful live performances of this ballet over the years ....but this is the cast I would have really loved to have seen live in a theatre. This DVD of a live performance with these dancers, is the next best thing.

Am I the only one to think that this Romeo and Juliet - which i only discovered recently - is so wonderful prioncipally because of the most incredible Juliet!! I cannot think of another dancer that portrays Juliet as perfectly as Alessandra Ferri. In fact I think she is the best dancer ever. I have never seen anyone else so supple and so graceful. I immediatly ordered the only other ballet - "Giselle" - that exists on DVD with her. What a pity that not more has been recorded.

Until they record Ivan Vasiliev and Natalia Osipova (real life couple) I don't think this version can be rivalled for the casting of Romeo and Juliet.
