Great game, stunning battles, shame about the AI and bugs,
This review is from: Rome: Total War (PC) (Video Game)
Rome: Total War is an amazing game in such that it combines elements of old games such as Civililisation (in terms of having a turn based campaign map of Europe with cities and stuff).
The Battles are in many ways amazing, the scale is impressive, watching 3000 troops battle it out while using tactics like flanking calvary, skirmishing at the start to break up the enemy front line etc.
The real problem I have with this game however is the hopelessness of the AI and stupid AI related bugs. In battles the AI is really stupid (and putting battle AI onto a hard setting mearly makes their troops unrealistically strong and hard to kill).
Assaulting cities is cool, but the AI is really restrictive, only certain walls can be scaled and only in certain, often unrealistic, ways. An annoying bug means that commanding a group of units that are just inside a city wall to move towards the town centre often means they start walking back outside and waiting for some reason (lunch maybe)!!!
If you assault a town with a huge army and easily take the entire town apart from the town square which has 1 enemy peasant still guarding it awaiting certain death, and then the pathetically low time limit runs out, then your entire huge army and commander will mysteriously commit mass suicide and dissappear! One of the most frustrating things I've ever had happen in a game.
The campaign map element of the game has some cool features like trade, spies, blockading ports, civil unrest. These are cool but are stupid when you find out the AI cheats and effectivly ignores them. Blocking trade routes and causing unrest in enemy cities is portrayed as a major tactical element of the game (it even says so on the box!) but in reality, the AI just ignores all this (according to tech support these features are just for multiplayer mode - despite there NOT being one!!!).
And if the AI wants a big well-armed army (despite having no access to mines or money) one will suddenly, mysteriously, appear.
All in all a good game, one which enoucrages you to keep playing, however after a while the bugs and the pathetic AI will start to annoy you so much you can't be bothered with it anymore.
Its a pity because a few more months of development to get rid of these bugs and to improve the AI would have made this game (in my opinion) one of the best games ever!
