This is an extremely ambitious and very knowing novel about literature, paternity and literary paternity. It's stuffed with nods to great American novelists both classic and contemporary, as well as accomplished comic set-pieces and some passages of wonderful writing. It's absorbing and extremely entertaining, though not perfect, overreaching itself slightly with a plot twist I won't spoil, and some occasionally overwrought prose. I'm not sure it knows quite what kind of book it wants to be, but in a novel as engrossing and enjoyable as this it's always better to have too much invention than not enough. Looking forward to Gilbert's next book.
