At the time 1952-1959 when these items were recorded the critics tended to dismiss Sonny Stitt as just a Parker imitator.
He was certainly influenced by Bird - especially on alto but on listening to these recordings now on tenor as well as alto it is evident that he had his own distinctive sound which is well worth listening to.
He had a great technique - probably as good as Stan Getz although he was not as original - but he was much better than many of his more lauded contemporaries and this set at this price is well worth a place in any modern jazz lover's collection.
