This review is from: Wilt [DVD] (DVD)
This film is absolutely dire, one of the worst screenplays I've come across and awfully miscast. The book is incredibly dark and witty - pure black comedy, but the film sensationally fails to recreate this in any way with unnecessary changes to the plot which detract from its direction and impact. The film totally fails to describe Henry Wilts humdrum life, how he's intelligent but downtrodden - a perennial underachiever to some - who detests corporate career climbing, and the keep up with the jones type attitude. And how his wife Eva, who is overweight, overbearing and emotionally immature ensures Wilt constantly daydreams fiendish plots to dispose of her. I doubt whether David Renwick, Griff Rhys Jones or Alison Steadman even read the book.
If you want proper adaptations of Tom Sharpe's amazing books seek out Blot on the Landscape or Porterhouse Blue instead.
