This review is from: Bang in the Middle (Paperback)
Part of my family is from Derbyshire, so I was personally drawn to the subject matter: a journey through Britain's belly, the bit in the middle between North and South that a lot of people struggle to place on a map. I didn't know quite what to expect but I enjoyed how personal and witty Shore's book is: there's a lot of humour in this book, a lot of stories and anecdotes, and a lot of far-ranging history too. As I read I came to realise how large and how great that middle bit of the country actually is:
Shakespeare, the Industrial Revolution, British Heavy Metal bands, Elgar, Tolkien, Robin Hood and Lady Godiva, Brian Clough and Philip Larkin are all in there, to name but a few. Overall, great entertainment with lots of
substance: a fantastic book about England, not just for Midlanders!
