I found this a genuinely interesting book. It had a little bit of everything but, ultimately, Thompson's diaries are able to give a fascinating insight into the way Churchill worked and thought during the war years. I have even more respect for him now. There are nice touches too - the two men clearly had a good working realtionship and Churchill's impish humour comes through well in certain incidents. I also admire the dedication with which Thompson undertook his very important task - guarding, at the time, the most important man in the world. Tom Hickman does a great job of editing the diaries and adding historical fact to the book. A great read and I'd certainly recommend it.
